OpenAI to Build a New Social Network to Rival X

OpenAI is reportedly developing an X-like social network, according to multiple sources familiar with the project. The network would be the latest project to rival major platforms like X and Facebook. According to a report from The Verge, there is already an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation that has a social feed, although the project is only in the early stages.
The report also states that CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project. The launch plans for the platform are unclear and could either launch within the already-existing ChatGPT software or a separate app. ChatGPT is already one of the most popular applications to download in the US in 2025, being the most-downloaded app in March.
CEO Sam Altman has yet to comment on the reports publicly. However, the development would add to his rivalry with former X CEO Elon Musk. The two have publicly gone back and forth since Musk left OpenAI and have rivaled on several projects. Following OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT, Musk went on to launch X-AI, a similar artificial intelligence software.

Besides Musk’s X, entering the social network space also puts OpenAI in competition with Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook. Meta is reportedly planning to add a social feed to its coming standalone app for its AI assistant. When reports of Meta building a rival to the ChatGPT app first surfaced a couple of months ago, Altman shot back on X again by saying, “ok, fine, maybe we’ll do a social app.” Now, that idea may be set to become a reality.
Furthermore, The Verge reports one idea behind the OpenA social prototype is for AI to help people share better content. “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous,” says someone working at another big AI lab. “Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something…”
